If someone doesn't turn up on the night, who gets their seat?
"That would just be occupied by a seat filler," says Cate Carpenter, Logies project manager. "They're usually Nine Network staff who wouldn't normally be invited guests." Seat fillers also take the place of Logies guests when they go to the bathroom, to make sure there are no gaps when the cameras show the audience.
How do people prove they've been invited to the Logies? Could someone talk their way in?
"When guests RSVP, they're sent an entry card with their name printed on it," Cate explains. "They can't get through the door without the entry card." Cate admits, however, that if a major celebrity such as Nicole Kidman turned up unannounced, "I'd go, 'Oh, look, you can have my seat.'"
How long does it take a celebrity to walk the red carpet?
"The Gold Logie nominees can take up to 90 minutes to get through the red carpet by the time they finish all the snaps and interviews along the way," Cate says. "They try to sign autographs if possible, so it can be quite slow."
Who gets the biggest cheers from the crowd on the red carpet?
Cate reveals that it's the contestants from The Biggest Loser. "You think,
'Oh my God, it must be Hugh Jackman... no, it's a Biggest Loser winner or finalist!'"
Can celebrities avoid the red carpet if they're really shy?
Yes. Cate says there's another entrance they can take into the Crown Entertainment Complex, but as far as she knows, none of them go that way. "They all seem to do the red carpet."
Are the Logies telecast live?
"We produce the Logies 'as live', which means that we start recording it about 30 to 40 minutes before the telecast actually goes out live," explains the executive producer, Janine Cooper. "This is so that we can have longer than a commercial break to do any special set-ups."
How do they make sure all the nominees are in the room when their names are read out?
"We find out before the telecast which nominees and presenters smoke and assign a PA to them who follows them if they go for a cigarette that way, we don't lose them," Janine explains. "And if they need to use the toilet before their nominated award, they'll be followed to the toilets to make sure they don't dawdle!"
Are winners given a time limit for their speeches?
"We advise all nominees to limit their acceptance speech to one minute," Janine says. "Of course, sometimes in the excitement of winning, people can speak for longer. If a speech is getting too long, we will cue the band to start playing and that generally gives winners the hint to wrap it up."
How do they make sure no one sneaks a peek at the Logies or the envelopes and finds out the winners beforehand?
A security guard watches the Logies all night, until the last one is handed out. As for the envelopes, "the presenters don't get them until just before they walk on stage, so there's no time to peek," Janine explains.
If Gold Logie voting finishes at 8pm on the night, when does the Gold Logie
get engraved?
Before the night, the names of all eight nominees are engraved on self-adhesive plates. When Cate finds out who received the most votes, she sticks their plate on the Gold Logie. "I have an answer by 8.15pm and that's when I put the winning plate on the Logie and take it backstage," she explains.
